what are we doing?

I always wonder, what are we trying to say through art?

Sometimes, we are so touched by art for art’s sake, by the exquisite craftsmanship of art itself, and we may in turn agree with the moral or philosophical views of the context – if there is one.

But what is art supposed to do? What is art supposed to say?

As a performer, are we to make choice of what work we want to take on? If so, do we base it on the artistic value, or its contextual value, or something else?

Yesterday I glanced outside the window of our living room, which faces the Hudson River on Riverside Drive. The trees have become much more barren.

The human condition? or how I feel about last week’s weather?

What we say is more important than how we say it, but what we Can say is also limited by our degree of articulation (craftsmanship). In that sense… an artist is a craftsman who found something worthwhile to say? If by contextual value you mean the thing we say rather than the way we say it, then I think that’s more important. But what is a performer?

I guess what I’m trying to say is that, sometimes the “artist” possesses superb craftsmanship, but the things he/she chooses to say is not worthwhile saying – sometimes even degrading to be praised through such high forms of art. Thus I wonder, what value is art?

A performer is… a performer. Instead of a composer, a playwright, it’s the instrumentalist/vocalist, the actor/actress.
